Kelene Blake
Kelene Blake is a Ph.D. Student from Trinidad and Tobago studying Health Behavior and Health Education at the University of Texas – Austin. She started writing poetry at age 11 and never stopped. She has been doing spoken word since moving to Austin in 2011.

Shasparay Tha Poet
Shasparay is the 2014 #2 female youth poet in the world after taking 2nd place at the 2014 Women of the World Poetry Slam youth competition. She is the 2013 They Speak Youth Slam champion and in 2012, was deemed the #2 ranking youth poet in Texas. She represented Austin in an international competition, Brave New Voices, and was a member of They Speak Youth Slam’s 2013 and 2014 team. Her first book, “Say it with Your Chest” has received regional recognition; this young poet is a human rights activist and volunteers with the Amala Foundation.

Julian Copado
Julian is a St. Edward’s graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He works as a Spanish Medical Interpreter for Dell Children’s Medical Center and as a Community Support Specialist for Phoenix House. His works are a self-reflection on growing up in a Mexican household in pre-developed Texas region and dealing with the fast changes with which is hometown is becoming.

Frank Sanchez
Frank Sánchez is a 23-year-old human boy from Austin, TX who studied Gender & Women’s Studies at Pomona College. His senior thesis studied the possibilities of slam poetry as a form that can be understood as a subculture whose members participate in the creation of localized counterpublics, which is a fancy way of saying he thinks poetry slams are hella dope, y’all!

Edwin Maldonado Jr.
“Ed Koch” began performing as a four year-old, competing in local talent competitions and spent eight years as a professional actor. He has represented Austin at the Southern Fried Poetry Slam regional tournament in 2012, 2013, and 2015 as a team member and coach of the “B Sides.” He returned to Austin after spending a year in Buffalo as a team member and coach of Buffalo’s Pure Ink team, taking first place at the 2013 Empire State Regional Poetry Slam (Western NY), 2014 QEW Regional Poetry Slam (Ontario, Canada), and the 2014 Albany Word Fest Invitational Slam.
