Red Salmon Arts presents a cuento time exploring some of our favorite multicultural stories.

This is an in-person, outdoors cuento time at 2000 Thrasher Lane!

We will featuring a reading of Miguel Goes to Eagle School with author, Isai Guitierrez.

Miguel Goes to Eagle School is about a duck that goes to Eagle School.  Non-traditional characters express complex themes in a way that is relatable to kids.  Now, more than ever, when parents are asking what they can say to their kids about what is happening in this country, this is a story that adults can read to children to stimulate conversations about fear and bullying and racism.

About the author

I was raised in a low-income family whose survival depended on social service agencies.  I have spent the greater part of my life in connection with these agencies.  As a young adult I began giving back to the community in which I was raised by volunteering in the same service agencies that allowed me the opportunity to advance in life.  I continue to serve my community in a variety of capacities.

I began my career in education as an associate teacher at the North District Alternative Elementary School in the Houston Independent School District.  By the time I left the alternative school, ten years later, I had risen to the position of Assistant Principal.  I transitioned from HISD in June of 2011 to serve as the Dean of Student Affairs at Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory of Houston.  Later, I became an adjunct professor at Houston Community College.  My years as an educator, have provided me the opportunity to learn and grow in a variety of capacities.  The diversity of my tenure in education has taught me to be a well rounded and respected leader.

In March, 2020, I published my first children’s book, Miguel Goes to Eagle School.  I believe in this story so much that I started my own publishing company, Dancing Duck Publishing LLC, so that I could have full control over this book and future projects.

Raising a family broadened my concept of “community”.  My role as the father of four boys made me realize that my obligations are beyond the community in which I was raised.  I continue searching for opportunities that allow me to learn and grow and to leverage my education, experience, training, creativity, and skills to better serve as an educator.  As well as to continue serving the community and my family.
