Yolqui: A Plática on Community Violence & Healing with Roberto Cintli Rodríguez
February 28, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Special Guests: Manuel X. Zamarripa & Jessica Tlazotiani of the Institute of Chicana/o Psychology
Co-sponsored by Red Salmon Arts and Institute of Chicana/o Psychology
Join us for an evening with Roberto Cintli Rodríguez as he discusses his most recent book, Yolqui, a Warrior Summoned from the Spirit World: Testimonios on Violence (University of Arizona Press).
Manuel X. Zamarripa & Jessica Tlazotiani of the Institute of Chicana/o Psychology will also discuss the role of a Chicanx Liberation Psychology in addressing community and historical trauma as a decolonized approach to well-being.
About the book: This book makes evident the links between colonial violence against Red-Black-Brown bodies to police violence in our communities today….Like the Nahuatl yolqui, this book is intended as a means of healing, offering a footprint going back to the origins of violence, and, more important, a way forward.
About the author: Roberto Cintli Rodríguez is an associate professor in the Department of Mexican American Studies at the University of Arizona. He writes for Truthout’s Public Intellectual Page and is a longtime award-winning journalist, columnist, and author.
Event is free and open to the public. Suggested donations: $5-20
Institute of Chicana/o Psychology is a community-building entity focused on wellness and strengths of the Chicanx community through the lens of Chicanx Psychology. In our work, we address both risk and protective factors related to the wellness of the Chicanx community, including historical factors of oppression as well as ancestral strengths and wisdom.
